HMOs offer employers managed care, where the providers of the plans are within their network.  HMOs are also cost effective and employers prefer these plans for their affordability.  However, if employees are comfortable with their family doctor or specialist and they are out of network, those providers are not covered under the HMO plan.  Referrals are also required to see any specialist by an employee’s primary care physician, (PCP).
