Vermont’s small business health insurance offers the following three managed care programs: Health Managed Organization, Preferred Provider Organization, and Point of Service.
If you are more focused on affordability the Health Managed Organization (HMO) plan is the right one for you. This plan keeps the price low as you’re not responsible for paying the final medical bill, just a monthly premium rate and copayment. The copayment is due at the time any medical service is received. Another part of this plan is selecting a primary care physician from a specified network. You must always stay within this network or you will not be covered.
A Preferred Provider Organization (PPO) allows you own primary care physician as well as allowing you to use some of your benefits outside of your network. Prices for PPO plans are relatively comparable to HMO plans but the main difference is paying a deductible. The deductible is the share of coverage you receive within a year. Once that mark is reach, you will not pay anymore of of pocket expenses.
A Point of Service (PPO) plan provides the most flexibility out of the three plans. The plan allows you to receive up to 100% of your benefits outside of the network when you’re referred by your primary care physician. The coverage uses a high deductible and has a higher monthly rate but you can lower your rates by living a healthier lifestyle.
Vermont’s continuous coverage plan gives benefits to those groups with 20 or more employees. Regulate by COBRA, the plan provides an 18 month extension to those who were previously under a group health plan. For those groups with less than 20 individuals, you may also be provided with an additional 18 months, assuming you had been under the plan for an additional six months prior to termination.
