There are two requirements you must meet for your small business to qualify for small group coverage in Wisconsin: They must have between 2 and 50 employees and they must be full time, meaning working 30 hours a week. The number of employees only counts those who are eligible for coverage. Part time workers are not eligible.

There are three main managed care programs under group coverage in Wisconsin: Health Managed Organization (HMO), Preferred Provider Organization (PPO), and Point of Service (POS).

HMO plans will not allow you to receive treatment outside of the network you chose. The plan, however, uses the copayment system, meaning you pay a small price every time you receive medical treatment. Prices will depend on what type of service you are using.

A PPO allows you to receive medical care outside your network all while paying a similar rate as an HMO. Although you will not receive full benefits outside your network, you will be covered in case of an emergency. Again, the cost of a PPO is the same as an HMO with the exception of paying a deductible. You can keep your premium rate low by increasing your deductible.

The POS for the state of Wisconsin allows you to see any doctor in or out of your network. If you get a referral, you’ll receive 100% benefits no matter what network you receive treatment. If you don’t, you still will receive treatment similar to a PPO. Again, to have a lower premium you could choose to pick a higher deductible. Also, by living a healthy lifestyle you could lower rates as well.

Wisconsin’s continuous coverage plan gives benefits to those groups with 20 or more employees. Regulate by COBRA, the plan provides an 18 month extension to those who were previously under a group health plan. For those groups with less than 20 individuals, you may also be provided with an additional 18 months.
