Celtic - California

Celtic has been rated A- Excellent by A.M. for over 20 years for their financial stability and their strength in the health insurance industry.  The main health plans that are offered for California residents are Celtic’s Basic Health Plan, CeltiCare Preferred Health Plan, and Health Savings Account health plans.

California’s Celtic Basic Health Plan offers high deductible plans, a pharmaceutical plan, and Preferred Provider Organization plan with an 80/20 coinsurance.

High Deductible Health Plans (HDHP), such as the CelticSaver, is a health insurance plan that has lower premiums but higher deductibles as opposed to traditional health insurance plans.  These plans are directed towards healthier, and usually younger, individuals and are a form of “catastrophic coverage.”  Deductibles range from $1,500 to $5,000 for individuals.

Preferred Provider Organizations are part of the main three health insurance plans which also includes Health Maintenance Organization (HMO) plans and Point of Service (POS) plans.  Point of Service plans are the most flexible and generally most expensive and Health Maintenance Organizations are the least flexible and generally least expensive of the three.  Preferred Provider Organization plans fall somewhere between the two.  Different from HMOs, PPOs allow members to choose from out-of-network care providers, whereas HMOs require members to choose from in-network care providers.  While PPO plans give their members freedom to choose, copays are also generally higher than that if in-network care providers were chosen.

Health Savings Accounts give members the freedom to choose where their health insurance dollars are allocated.   Some may choose to save their health insurance for future medical expenses, while others choose to use it for copayments.
